Regular antenatal care helps track your baby's growth and your own health. Here's what to expect and why starting early helps.
Start early
Booking your first antenatal visit as soon as you know you are pregnant allows your care team to confirm the pregnancy, review your health history and plan the visits ahead.
What happens at visits
Visits usually include checking blood pressure and weight, discussing how you feel, recommended tests, and guidance on nutrition and supplements such as iron and folic acid.
Warning signs
Seek care immediately for vaginal bleeding, severe headache, blurred vision, swelling of the face or hands, fever, severe abdominal pain, leaking fluid or reduced baby movements.
Preparing for birth
Antenatal care is also a good time to plan where you will deliver, how you will get there, and who will support you.
